Chemical raw material industry emission reduction path

China’s carbon emissions have a stable industrial concentration, production and supply of electricity, steam and hot water, ferrous metal smelting and rolling processing industry, non-metallic mineral products industry, transportation, warehousing and post and telecommunications services, petroleum processing and coking industries, the carbon emissions of the “six high-emission industries” of the chemical raw materials and chemical products industry account for a large proportion of the national carbon emissions, and are the key to achieving carbon peaks.

Market size and energy consumption of the “chemical industry”
New chemical materials are an important branch of the new material industry and the most dynamic and potential field of the basic chemical industry. In recent years, the turnover of chemical materials and products in China has increased year by year, from 285.043 billion yuan in 2010 to 439.868 billion yuan in 2018, and a slight decline in 2019.
From 2010 to 2019, the total energy consumption of the domestic chemical raw materials and chemical products manufacturing industry maintained an upward trend, rising from 367.41 million tons of standard coal in 2010 to 532.72 million tons of standard coal in 2019, accounting for 19.8% of the total energy consumption in the manufacturing industry.
Although the peak period of carbon emissions in my country’s chemical raw material and chemical product manufacturing industry has passed, the total carbon emissions of domestic chemical raw material and chemical product manufacturing industry showed a downward trend from 2010 to 2019. However, according to the carbon emission intensity, “light emission industries”, “medium emission industries” and “heavy emission industries”, chemical fibre manufacturing, chemical raw material and product manufacturing are still in the medium emission industries.
Emission reduction path of chemical raw materials and chemical products industry
Carbon emission reduction in the chemical industry can start from the consumption side and the supply side, and the paths include consumption reduction, high-end products, terminal substitution, efficiency improvement, fuel substitution, raw material substitution, and terminal treatment. From the perspective of technical solutions, in the production of chemical products, carbon emission reduction can be considered from the three dimensions of low-carbon raw materials, low-carbon fuels and system energy saving. From an economic point of view, the cost reduction of disruptive technologies such as green hydrogen and CCS will greatly enhance the cost competitiveness of low-carbon and zero-carbon chemical production.
